Angelarosa is a small family winery high in the Avellino hills, at elevations to about 1600 feet. The steep vineyards at such high elevations benefit from a warm, sunny southwestern exposure and wide differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Which means the grapes ripen well but also store up their perfume and fine, delicate fruit.
Although they produce a good Aglianico, Angelarosa's standouts are whites - from a delicious Falanghina, to a fine Fiano and an exceptional Greco di Tufo in the best zone for that grape. Nunzio Aurisicchio is the owner and agronomist, and several years ago he assured his success by hiring the young enologo, Fortunato Sebastiano. For generations Nunzio's family has been growing grapes for sale to large, commercial wineries. Since he started to bottle wines under the Angelarosa name in 2006, with Fortunato's help, he has quickly captured a small but devoted following of connoisseurs in Campania. This following will doubtless grow in America now that it's available here.
We're convinced that the Angelarosa Greco di Tufo (DOCG) is the best that Campania offers. Which means it's one of Italy's greatest white wines. Period.
