Paola and Annachiara
|
Do you recognize the word "Falanghina"? Have you drunk wine made of this grape? If so, you have Leonardo Mustilli to thank for it, at least in part. Leonardo spearheaded an early initiative to identify, develop and obtain official recognition of the Falanghina grape. Which is to say that he was a pioneer in the "local grape" movement that has raised so many "peasant" grapes into official recognition, public acceptance and critical favor.
The Mustilli family has been in the historic hill town of Sant’Agata de’ Goti for 500 years. ("St. Agatha of the Goths" – which gives you an idea how old this beautiful place is, and why it was founded). It was in 1960 that Leonardo and his wife Marilì established the present-day Mustilli winery. To this day, under the leadership of Paola and Annachiara, Leonardo’s capable daughters, Mustilli uses only local grape varieties from their own vineyards – Falanghina, Piedirosso, Aglianico. With the assistance of enologo Fortunato Sebastiano, the wines are going from strength to strength.
