PRODUCERS FROM Piedmont: Cascina Roccalini

Paolo Veglio learned about grape farming from tenant farmers on his family’s land. In his teens, Paolo made demijohns of Dolcetto for family and friends. Dante Scaglione, Bruno Giacosa’s enologo, took an interest and soon Giacosa was buying Paolo’s grapes. Several years ago, Paolo decided to take the leap of faith in himself and his vineyard and make his own wine. His Barbaresco 2005 is the fruit of his early work. When Scaglione started his consultancy in 2007, Paolo was the first (and still only) producer that he approached. Paolo told us that Scaglione has no “formula” for making wine. He works to bring out the best in the fruit and not to muzzle it with oak. And the fruit here is superior, especially as it comes from vines that are up to 50 years old.
